About Book
Dental implantology has, within a single generation, moved from the margins of clinical practice to its centre. What was once the province of a few specialists is now an expectation of everyday patient care, and the replacement of missing teeth with osseointegrated implants has become one of the most predictable and rewarding treatments modern dentistry can offer. Yet the every success of the discipline has created a new challenge: the growing distance between the confidence with which implants are marketed and the depth of understanding with which they should be placed. This book addresses that gap with admirable directness. Rather than overwhelming the reader with exhaustive theory, it returns to the fundamental maneuvers — the small, deliberate, repeatable acts of judgement and technique upon which every successful implant depends. From patient assessment and treatment planning, through the surgical placement of the fixture and the management of hard and soft tissue, to the prosthetic phase and the long years of maintenance that follow, the text follows the natural arc of treatment as it unfolds in the clinic. Each step is explained in the order it is performed, and the reasoning behind each decision is made plain. The editors and contributing authors have drawn on wide clinical and academic experience to produce a guide that is at once rigorous and accessible. Students encountering implantology for the first time will find a clear and orderly path through a subject that can seem daunting; established practitioners will find a valuable reaffirmation of sound principle. It is a pleasure to commend this work to every clinician who wishes to place implants not merely competently, but well.
